DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- High winds and bitter cold temperatures are sweeping across Iowa as authorities continue to urge caution when traveling within the state.
Blizzard warnings remained for most of the northern and eastern sections of Iowa on Sunday, with wind chill advisories across many of the southern counties.
Wind gusts reached above 40 miles per hour in some areas as temperatures dipped to -6 degrees in cities including Estherville in northwest Iowa and Marshalltown in the central part of the state. Wind chills made it feel like 35 below zero in some areas.
Frank Boksa, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Johnston, says the blizzard warnings will likely end late Sunday afternoon.
The National Weather Service is predicting that the storm will move off into the Great Lakes region later Sunday evening, causing winds in Iowa to diminish.
