CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - The former CEO of an embattled kosher slaughterhouse is scheduled to be arraigned on federal immigration charges. The hearing for Sholom Rubashkin, the former head of Agriprocessors Inc., was set for Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids. Also scheduled to appear was Karina Pilar Freund, who worked in the company's human resources department. She entered a written plea of not guilty on Tuesday and waived her right to appear at the arraignment. Last week, a federal grand jury returned a 12-county indictment against the company and its managers, including Rubashkin and Freund, alleging they were involved in efforts to employ illegal immigrants. Federal immigration agents raided the northeast Iowa plant in May and arrested 389 workers. A hearing scheduled for Wednesday for the company has been reset for Dec. 5.
