KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Education took center stage at the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce's Government in Focus State of Education presentation Friday morning.
County officials and citizens gathered Friday to hear from representatives from A.T. Still University, Truman State University, Moberly Area Community College and all three school districts in Adair County; the news was positive from all six schools.
Leaders from the Brashear, Novinger and Kirksville Schools announced that all three districts were awarded accreditation with distinction from the state. This is the first time the Novinger School District received the award.
The Kirksville School District celebrated being accredited with distinction eight years in a row.
“That puts us in the top 6 percent of all schools. In other words, there's only 30 schools in the state that have sustained that level of achievement,” said Kirksville Superintendent Pat Williams.
Officials from all three school districts say they're working hard to maintain high student achievement standards and navigate tough economic times.
Officials from all of the schools also highlighted the importance of cooperation.
“I think we need to have greater collaboration with the public schools, community college. I'd like to see 2 plus 2 programs. I'd like to see us serve the county and city governments better,” said Truman State University President Darrell Krueger.
Krueger and A.T. Still University President Jack Magruder pledged to work together to create more opportunities for students. School officials say cooperation is important because each facility has unique resources that can benefit the others.
