KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The first weekend of Missouri firearms deer season has come to a close. We checked in with the Missouri Department of Conservation to see how everything went on opening weekend.
Other than the usual violations, Conservation agents tell KTVO that everything has gone smoothly so far.
“Nothing out the ordinary, we haven't had any accidents reported in the region, in the 15 counties in northeast Missouri. I haven't heard a report about statewide, but that's always a good thing. So far so good, we haven't had any accidents,” said Regional Supervisor Matt Wolken of the Missouri Department of Conservation.
As of Sunday afternoon, 1100 deer were killed in Adair County. Around 75,000 deer were harvested statewide, down about 26,000 deer from last year.
Wolken says the windy weather kept some hunters in yesterday, but hopefully more went out Sunday. Deer hunters had until 10:00 Sunday night to check their deer in with the conservation department.
