ELDON, IOWA -- Even though elementary school children can't vote, some Heartland students are participating in Election Day.

Fifth graders at Cardinal Elementary School held a mock presidential debate Tuesday morning. They discussed all of the hot issues.

Four students represented John McCain, Sarah Palin, Joe Biden and Barack Obama.

Fellow fifth graders in the audience asked the candidates questions and held signs to show who they supported.

"They only get the one more election to watch, other than this one, before they get to vote. So we thought it was very important for them to get involved early to be ready to vote in the upcoming elections," said Fifth Grade Teacher Brian Cutsforth.

Students in first through fifth grades also participated in an election at school developed especially for them. After the ballots were counted, 57% supported Obama and 42% voted for McCain.

The fifth grade teacher also told KTVO there was one write-in for Ron Paul.
