JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Kenny Hulshof's campaign accuses the attorney general's office of stalling on a case involving a Kirksville woman who fatally shot a man in her home.
Hulshof spokesman Scott Baker says Democratic Attorney General Jay Nixon is "dragging his feet and waiting until the election to make a ruling on this." Hulshof is running against Nixon in the governor's race.
The case involves a "castle doctrine" law that is backed by guns rights supporters.
Jackie Gleason fatally shot Rogelio Johnson, 48, at her home just outside of Kirksville in May. A coroner's inquest determined the case "death by felony." No charges have been filed against Gleason.
Adair County prosecutor Mark Williams transferred it to the attorney general's office in late September. Williams, a Democrat, says the file is extensive and that it doesn't seem unreasonable to take a month to decide whether to prosecute.
A spokesman for Nixon's campaign called Hulshoff's allegation a "desperate attack."
