KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Virtually everyone is looking for new ways to cut back during these tough economic times.
But our Fact Finder team has learned that for Missourians, those savings won't be found at the grocery store.
A new survey by the Missouri Farm Bureau found that food prices in the third quarter were the highest they've been in almost 20 years. The Farm Bureau survey compares the prices of 16 food items from grocery stores across the state.
Fact Finder discovered that in Missouri the average price for the 16 items was $48.34. The national average was $.34 higher at $48.68. Experts say Missouri usually comes in well below the national average.
Food prices have increased considerably in the last year alone. Last year in the same quarter the Farm Bureau's shopping list rang up at $43.86. That means the total price has increased $4.48 this year.
