Fire response leads to murder investigation

KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Update: 5:00 p.m.

Charges have officially been filed against Paul Potter of Kirksville.

Potter is being held in the Adair County jail on $1 million cash only bond.

We have obtained a copy of the probable cause statement. You can view that here.  We do want to caution that there is some graphic language in the statement.

Kirksville Police are conducting a homicide investigation.

According to police, just after 11 p.m. Sunday, Kirksville Police and Fire departments were dispatched to the 100 Block of Valley Forge Drive to a report of a car fire.

The first officer on scene observed a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Shortly after their arrival, officers became aware of a nearby disturbance. An investigation into the disturbance uncovered an additional fire in the nearby apartments and a deceased white male.

One subject was taken into custody at the scene. No other suspects are being sought at this time. The identity of the victim has not been released.

Assisting in the initial call response were the Kirksville Police and Fire Departments, Adair County Prosecuting Attorney, Adair County Sheriff's Department, Truman State University Department of Public Safety and the Adair County Ambulance District.
