Downtown cameras help snare arson suspect

OTTUMWA, IOWA -- An 11-year old Ottumwa juvenile has been arrested and charged with intentionally setting two fires.

Ottumwa Police Chief Jim Clark released a statement saying a male youth had been taken into custody for setting a February fire at a River Community Credit Union’s ATM and a March 14 fire set on the outside property of the Evangelical Foursquare Church located at 122 South Moore Street.

The juvenile was arrested on Monday and charged with two counts of Arson and one count of Disorderly Conduct (activating a false fire alarm). 

The disorderly conduct charge comes from a false alarm set at the Bridge View Center.

The boy was released to the custody of his parents.

On February 27, 2012 at approximately 10:45 PM, a male juvenile removed ATM deposit envelopes from the River Community Credit Union’s ATM machine located at 644 West Second Street and intentionally set them on fire.

On March 14, 2012 at approximately 9:15 PM, a fire was intentionally set on the outside property of the Evangelical Foursquare Church located at 122 South Moore Street.

On March 17, 2012 at approximately 7:15 PM, a male juvenile activated a false fire alarm at the Bridgeview Center located at 102 Church Street.

On April 30, 2012 at 2:30 PM, an eleven year-old juvenile was arrested and charged with two counts of Arson and one count of Disorderly Conduct (activating a false fire alarm). 

The juvenile was released to his parent.  The investigation into the intentional fire-setting and the false alarm was conducted by the Ottumwa Police and Fire Departments.  The agencies would like to thank the public for helping identify the suspect from a photograph taken by the downtown camera system outside of the Bridgeview Event Center after the false fire alarm was activated.
