RATHBUN LAKE, IOWA -- Theft charges have been filed against a former clerk at the Honey Creek Resort in Appanoose County.

According to the State Auditor’s Office, Kathy Ewing was fired last October after she allegedly transferred more than $2,700 from Honey Creek’s accounts to her own.

The Associated Press says that Ewing told sheriffs deputies that she thought she could use the money to get caught up on bills.

State Auditor David Vaudt conducted an audit of the resort after a manager was told by a credit card processor of unusual activity in which he found 10 improper fund transactions between August of 2011 and October of 2011.

As of Friday afternoon, the case has not been reported on Iowa Courts Online.

The resort, located at Rathbun Lake near Centerville, is operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, but managed by Minnesota-based Central Group Cos. Inc.
