OTTUMWA, IOWA -- With snow expected to fall Thursday afternoon, snow crews have been busy preparing for what may be heavy accumulation in some areas of the Heartland.

The Ottumwa Public Works Coordinator Steve Edgington said because of the advance notice of the snow storm, he was able to have more salt called in.

They have approximately 800 tons of salt on hand and another 160 tons are expected to arrive on Thursday.

Edgington said all of the trucks are ready to hit the roads.

“We'll be out there running 12 hour shifts like we always do. I'll put the snow ordinance into effect once it starts snowing. I'll go ahead and put the snow ordinance into effect and hopefully people will abide by it -- sure makes it easier for us,” said Edgington.

Edgington stressed for drivers to not pass snow plows and stay at least 50 feet behind salt trucks.

He said emergency routes will be plowed first, followed by routes with hills.
