In 2012, a Rebtel survey estimated that 56 percent of Americans were away from their significant other on Valentine’s Day. This year, long-distance couples have the benefit of utilizing technology to make it easier than ever for them to feel like they are right in the same room or by the using apps to send great gifts. There are also couples who end up becoming passionate procrastinators and wait until the last minute to plan a romantic evening. Smartphones and tablets can help couples in all situations ensure they have a quality Valentine’s Day.

“Mobile shopping has become mainstream,” said Josh Beelman, retail store manager for U.S. Cellular in Kirksville. “With smartphones and tablets that offer access to a variety of apps available in the Google Play Store, mobile web browsing, and a fast 4G LTE network, it’s easier than ever to plan the perfect date or connect with your significant other if you are forced to be apart on the 14th.”

According to IBM, a 2012 analysis of online shopping the week leading up to Valentine’s Day found that 10 percent of all sales came through mobile devices. What were people shopping for? There was an 18 percent growth in mobile sales of jewelry and intimate apparel, and a 15 percent uptick in mobile sales of health and beauty items, such as lotions and fragrances. Google also found last-minute searches for flowers grew 227 percent during the same week leading up to Valentine’s Day.

To help you plan a memorable Valentine’s Day apart or quickly plan at the last minute, U.S. Cellular recommends the following apps:

1. Love Poems app — will give you plenty of inspiration on how to say I love you. Search, save, and share your favorite quotes for love, romance or friendship.

2. Love Frames app — Capture images from your Valentine’s Day celebration or select from you photo library from the last time you were together and add it to this free app. It comes with dozens of photo frames to add a touch of romance to your snapshots. Save photos to your device gallery, send them to your loved ones via email or text message, or share on Facebook and Twitter.

3. Jeego app — Make your partner feel special by sending them a customized e-card. Send these animated cards to your partner’s Facebook, Twitter, email or even their smartphone, and personalize them with your own special photos and text.

4. Couple app – You can easily stay in touch with the person you love, sharing the little things throughout your day with each other, without sacrificing your productivity during the day. Pair creates a timeline for just the two of you where you can chat, share video messages, voice messages, and your location with each other with just the touch of a button.

”In addition to smartphones and tablets that can make life simpler and easier, U.S. Cellular customers also get unique benefits like Overage Protection and a valuable rewards program that recognizes loyalty,” adds Beelman. “You can use your rewards points for faster phone upgrades and free ringtones.”
