In 2012, a Rebtel survey estimated that 56 percent of Americans were away from their significant other on Valentine’s Day. This year, long-distance couples have the benefit of utilizing technology to make it easier than ever for them to feel like they are right in the same room or by the using apps to send great gifts. There are also couples who end up becoming passionate procrastinators and wait until the last minute to plan a romantic evening. According to IBM, a 2012 analysis of online shopping the week leading up to Valentine’s Day found that 10 percent of all sales came through mobile devices. What were people shopping for? There was an 18 percent growth in mobile sales of jewelry and intimate apparel, and a 15 percent uptick in mobile sales of health and beauty items, such as lotions and fragrances. Google also found last-minute searches for flowers grew 227 percent during the same week leading up to Valentine’s Day.
