One institution in Wapello County that received an award Thursday evening was the American Gothic House Center.

Administrator Holly Berg told KTVO that because of the work with the Ottumwa Convention and Visitors bureau, the award would not be possible.

“We are receiving this award for our collaborative efforts with the convention and visitors bureau. Together, we promote the cultural attractions and the many great cultural events and organizations that are here in Wapello County,” said Berg.

Wapello County Supervisor Greg Kenning added his thoughts on the award and what the center means for southeast Iowa.

“One of our goals and ambitions has been that we would promote tourism in Wapello County. That has been coming along, and slowly we have finally caught a little fire with what is going on at the gothic house. I think it is something that we are not only getting local recognition for, but a lot of worldwide recognition as well,” said Kenning.

Joining Berg on accept the award from former Ottumwa Mayor Dale Uehling was Wapello County Supervisor Steve Siegel. In his address to the crowd, Siegel noted that the continued support from the community is what keeps the American Gothic Center vibrant.

The Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce also presented the annual Gene Schultz Community Service Award to John Hunott.
