OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is being held in Ottumwa on May 11; and organizers are already starting to gear up for the big event.

This week, the local chapter of Susan G. Komen sent out an informational tutorial on how participants can train for this year’s race.

“If you are a novice, a person that really has not gotten into running; now is the timeframe that you want to start your basic training. There is a 12-week plan that you can use, and it basically starts with a person just walking; and you walk, maybe jog a little, but no more than 30 seconds. You will gradually build up to where on race day you are able to jog the complete three miles,” said Tom Shafer, who is a board member of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Shafer added that registration for this year’s race will open up in February. Participants will be able to register on-line, as well as through the organization itself.
