KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Friday marked 71 years since Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Bombs that rained down on Pearl Harbor robbed thousands of men, women and children of their lives.

Today, men and women who defended our freedom at Pearl Harbor and other conflicts may be receiving disability compensation.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, in order to receive disability benefits the injury or disease must be a result of serving in active duty or active training.

The Department of Veteran Affairs adds that disability can apply to physical and mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Service members must also have separated or been honorably discharged from service. Those who were dishonorably discharged are not eligible for benefits.

All disability compensations require the disability to be service-connected.
