OTTUMWA, IOWA -- With it being the holiday season, it is even more important to live an active and healthy lifestyle even with the temptation of delicious foods.

With Iowa’s initiative to become the healthiest state, the city of Ottumwa is still working hard on becoming a Blue Zones Community.

On Tuesday, Lynelle Diers, who is on the Power of 9 Committee, presented an update on the application to the Wapello County Board of Supervisors.

Ottumwa was selected for a site visit by the Blue Zones Committee out of Des Moines at the beginning of last year but was not ultimately chosen. However, that has not stopped Diers and the rest of the Power of 9 from moving forward.

“The Power 9 Board has been actively engaged in the leadership committee has been meeting and we have had our orientation of what Blue Zones is about so we will be trying to initiate volunteers and we still need people to sign up and support it. One of the criteria to become certified is we have to have 20% supporting the initiative,” said Diers.

Ottumwa will know January 1 if they have been selected a certified community. Diers said even if they are not chosen, they will continue to take the necessary steps on their own to become certified.
