OTTUMWA, IOWA -- It’s called the Student Intervention Program and the Iowa Education Department will soon be requiring all public schools in Iowa to implement this program

The program will require students to be screened at least three times a year.

For those students that fall below a certain score, they will then be given extra instruction.

“It’s just a decision teachers have to make to be able to provide those accommodations and interventions that are going to keep kids learning and not let a kid fall through the cracks. That's the bottom line and that's what response to intervention is all about, is to try to eliminate that problem,” said Mark Hanson, Ottumwa High School Principal.

Hanson added that response to intervention is a systematic way of identifying those students that need extra help; he said all it may take is just some small group work.

The high school already has many programs that help to address various problems students may be facing.
