OTTUMWA, IOWA -- When the weather starts getting colder, that means the Salvation Army kettle bell ringers are ready to take their places outside local businesses to raise money for the Salvation Army.

For the next few weeks, all the money collected from the kettle bell fundraiser in Ottumwa will go towards the Salvation Army's community Thanksgiving dinner, which is served on the holiday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

While the funds help purchase the food, the Salvation Army is always looking for more volunteers to help serve it.

"For volunteers for our Thanksgiving dinner, they can do one of two things, they can either show up on that day or they can call in and let us know, that's the easiest way and best way that we can plan for having people," said Captain Oliver Knuth of the Ottumwa Salvation Army. "Either way, every year, we have lots of people come in and help with that and... last year we served 600 total -- we delivered 400 meals and served 200 at our facility."

This year, the South Hy-Vee is helping donate the turkey, and the meal with include traditional Thanksgiving foods like mashed potatoes, stuffing and rolls.

After Thanksgiving, the profits raised from the kettle bells will go towards Christmas projects and other programs the Salvation Army hosts throughout the year.
