OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The celebration of Veteran’s Day continued on Monday recognizing all of those that have served or are currently serving our country.

Both North and South Ottumwa Hy-Vee’s recognized local veterans Monday morning with a complimentary breakfast.

And to help serve breakfast were cadets of Ottumwa High School’s JROTC as well as members of the National Guard.

Both the young and old recognized what so many have done for our country.

“I had two uncles that were in two wars so I basically -- we did a little gift for them. Veterans Day means to me is you should still thank the people that have served. If they're still there in active duty or not, you should still thank them,” said Cadet Raquela Rotzinger of Ottumwa High School.

Ottumwa High School’s JROTC will also be holding its annual steak dinner this Thursday evening from 5 to 8 at the National Guard Armory.

Each year 300 to 400 people attend the dinner.

The dinner is a way for the cadets to get out and meet members of the community, as well as an opportunity for them to raise funds for their two teams that participate against other JROTC’s.

“We do a series of fundraisers but this is one of our big ones. This is the one that the kids look forward to. Traditionally we do five hours a semester of community service. This is one we never have trouble getting kids to do. They like to get out there and see the old veterans, see the members of the community. It makes a big difference to the program,” said Chief John Wynn.

The cost of the dinner is $11.50 which includes a rib-eye steak, potato, two sides, dessert and a drink.
