KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Fire departments across the nation will be stressing the importance of fire safety all this upcoming week.
October 7-13 is Fire Prevention Week 2012.
This year's theme is “Always Have Two Ways Out.”
The Kirksville Fire Department wants people to know you should always have a Plan B in place when Plan A doesn't work when trying to escape from a fire.
"In a fire, if everyone plans to go out the front door and the fire is in front of the front door, have an alternate way to get out so you're not caught off guard on the moment. You can have a secondary plan. It's preplanning for the worst. You can always find the second way of trying to get out," said Silas Springer of the Kirksville Fire Department.
The fire department will be coming out to schools and public places all this week to educate about preventing fires with topics such as matches and lighter safety, importance of smoke detectors, and the stop-drop-roll method.
