MILAN, MO. -- The eyesore is finally gone!

The building that once sat on E. 3rd St. and S. Main St. in Milan has been demolished.

The building is on the Southside of the town square and was sitting idle for some time.

City Administrator James Onello said Martha Bogard left the city $500,000 when she passed away for facade improvement to the downtown.

“The money that Martha Bogard left she earmarked it for facade improvement,” Onello said. “And, keeping in spirit with her request we looked for an alternative funding mechanism and we came up with a strategy that would allow us to use general fund dollars.”

“We are getting ready to take down the final piece,” Derrick Fee owner of Red Rock said. “We’re using an excavator and we will take the roof off first. It's attached to another building, so we have to be safe there (we’re bringing) it all down slowly but surely.”

Several people came out to watch the building be torn down.

Onello said once the building is demolished the plan is to build an amphitheatre.

He said the actual design is a working progress, but the hope is to have some type of venue where different groups and organizations can have an activity on the square.
