KIRKSVILLE, MO -- One Heartland group is asking the public to support a new local use tax that will appear on the ballot this November.

If approved by voters, the use tax would replace a sales tax that was ruled unconstitutional by the Missouri Supreme Court earlier this year.

At the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meeting Monday afternoon, the board decided to show support for a use tax proposal.

Such a tax would replace a local sales tax that was collected from those who bought vehicles such as cars and boats out of state, then brought them back into Adair County to be used.

The tax was ruled unconstitutional several months ago.

Now, Adair County and the City of Kirksville want to replace it with a local use tax to help recover revenue lost when the sales tax was eliminated.

The next step for the board is to provide information to the public in the chamber's next newsletter and during the candidate forum in October.

Voters will decide in November if they want to approve a local use tax for Kirksville and Adair County.
