ATLANTA, MO -- A month into the school year and things are going well at the Atlanta C-3 school district. Officials say you can thank the hard work of the custodian staff for making the necessary repairs over the summer.
While the building was being taken care of, school officials were working on plans for this year which included critiquing the curriculum and applying for a new program.
“We applied for the A+ program. Hopefully by the end of this year we will be designated A+ and our kids will be able to have the benefits of that,” Atlanta School Superintendent Will Perkins said.
A few teachers retired over the summer and another is returning part time as a data evaluator. This caused the district to realign a few things but says things are flowing smoothly, including a program started last year.
“Last year we began RTI, Response Intervention; this is our second year going into that. Curriculum wise it goes along with that data collection position we hired to take a close look at what we need to do to reach those state and federal requirements to meet our testing scores,” said Perkins
Financially wise, like most heartland schools, the economy is tough and has caused the district to constantly crunch numbers to stay alive. But with Atlanta maintaining fiscal responsibility over the years, things are looking great once again.
“The past few years we have had a surplus budget and we have been able to maintain the programs on services that we offer to our district because the numbers have been good to us. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t come without some headaches. We have had to tighten our belts just like every school has. But, I think if we watch what we do, we will be fine,” said Perkins.
Coming up this weekend, Atlanta will be hosting a baseball tournament. The community is encouraged to come out.
