JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Missouri House Republicans have decided against trying to override Democratic Governor Jay Nixon's veto of legislation on vehicle sales taxes.
The bill was intended to reverse a Missouri Supreme Court ruling that local sales taxes cannot be charged on vehicles purchased out of state or in private transactions.
No motion was made to override Nixon's veto when lawmakers met Wednesday.
The Republican-led House and Senate approved the measure earlier this year.
House GOP leader Tim Jones said Wednesday that members of his party had several concerns about it.
Missouri's high court said instead of a sales tax, a local "use tax" could be charged if approved by local voters.
The city of Kirksville will be putting a "local use tax" proposal before voters during November's general election.
