OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Just this fall, Kohl’s Department Stores will be opening up 12 new locations throughout the country. The new stores will add 1500 jobs nationwide, including 125 in the City of Bridges.

The new Ottumwa location is the company’s 16th store in the Hawkeye State.

Ottumwa City Administrator Joe Helfenberger told KTVO Wednesday that the new store reiterates why Ottumwa is the regional shopping center of southeast Iowa.

“We needed to have it. If it goes to one of our neighboring communities, then we are no longer the retail hub. We need to maintain that by encouraging and building upon our base. We have an excellent base for business services and that strengthens it,” Helfenberger said.

The Ottumwa Kohl’s is set to open September 26.

The new building was modeled after a building that received an LEED Certification; meaning that the facility is energy efficient from the roof to the ground.
