MARCELINE, MO -- It is a long-running tradition between Marceline and Brookfield high schools: The Bell Game.

And at the beginning of Friday night’s Bell Game, Marceline High School retired a jersey of one of its own.

The 40 yard line was painted in memory of Zachary Cupp, 17, who was supposed to be this year's football captain.

On August 2, 2012 Cupp was killed after a drunken driver's vehicle crossed the center line and struck his vehicle head-on.

And on Friday, the school retired his number 40 jersey.

Zach's jersey will remain retired until the family request that it be reinstated. During its retirement the jersey will hang in a case at the MHS field house lobby where fans can view it and remember everything that Zach represented to his team and town.

Friday night’s Bell Game coin toss was conducted by Zach’s grandfather, Joe Cupp.

Zach is survived by his parents, Matt and Laurie Cupp, sisters Katie and Maddie Cupp and brother Max Cupp.
