OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Labor Day marked the last day of Beach Ottumwa being open for the summer and it ended with a different kid of splash.

Dog splashes that is!

The Dog Paddle has become an annual event for more than five years now, not only to end the Beach Ottumwa’s swim season but also to benefit the Heartland Humane Society.CBS 3.2 News promo banner

From 6 to 8 Monday evening, the Beach Ottumwa looked more like a dog water park than anything else.

“The dogs get to come and swim. They have a wonderful time. Admission is just dog or cat food and they need to have proof of rabies and be on a leash but they have a wonderful time,” said Jean Sporer, Heartland Humane Society.

Many of the dog owners said they look forward to the Dog Paddle each year and they’re pretty sure their dogs do too.
