OTTUMWA, IOWA -- A few weeks ago, KTVO reported a story about how the Ottumwa Fire Department was sending firefighters to the National Fire Academy in Maryland.
The firefighters have returned from their classes, and according to Firefighter Grant Gaumer, the courses he completed will help him situations where it can sometimes be stressful.
“They taught me how to drill down and define a problem, and one the problem is defined, we were taught how to measure the problem, analyze it, improve it and also how to control the problem. In addition to that, I also got to network with the other firefighters, paramedics and service directors. We sat down and compared how our processes are similar and how they are different. It was a great experience and I look forward to have an opportunity to return to the National Fire Academy,” Gaumer said.
Also attending the academy in August were Ottumwa Fire Chief Tony Miller and Firefighter Nathan West.
The academy, which is operated by FEMA, gives courses to firefighters and paramedics from all 50 states on a variety of topics; ranging from hazmat situations to EMS classes.
