MT. PLEASANT, IOWA -- The Iowa State Patrol wants to remind drivers that they are stepping up enforcement this holiday weekend.

With the warm weather, Iowa's parks and resorts are going to be very popular.

The Iowa State Patrol knows that everyone wants to have a good holiday weekend, however, when it comes to consuming alcohol, the department has a zero tolerance policy for those who drink and drive.

"With an increase in driving and the consumption of alcohol, if you are going to consume, we strongly encourage you to designate a sober driver this weekend. For the past few days, the Iowa State Patrol has been participating in a national program to combat drunk driving. We are going to have extra troopers out on the road. This may be that weekend where you see those extra officers, and if you are under the influence of alcohol or any other substance that deemed illegal, you will be arrested," said Trooper Jason Marlow.

Marlow also emphasized that drivers need to be aware of their speed, but also distractions while driving. He encourages everyone not to text or even be on the phone when they are behind the wheel. The state patrol wants everyone to keep their eyes on the road.
