Although it’s hot outside, that didn’t stop the women of VFW Lady Auxiliary Post 2508 from rocking for our veterans outside a Kirksville grocery store.

Auxiliary treasurer, Dixie Welte, started rocking in front of Hy-Vee at 6 a.m. Friday and will be staying until midnight.

She said they’re out there to raise money for the veteran programs the VFW offers.

“Veterans are my passion,” said Welte. “My husband is a veteran, my son is a veteran. I had someone say earlier it’s going to be hot this afternoon, and I say well no hotter than it is in the desert in Afghanistan. If they can do it for months on end, then I can do it for one day to help them.”

She said one of the big programs they’re looking to support is the Fisher House. “It’s like the Ronald McDonald house, only Fisher Houses are located at veteran hospitals,” she said.

“Missouri got their first Fisher House this year, and it’s located at Jefferson Barracks.”

The VFW also offers scholarship programs for several grades.

Welte said the VFW not only needs monetary help, but help with sewing clothing as well.

She said it’s important people know that they’re here.

“We want to let people know that VFW is more than just a club sitting outside of Kirksville,” said Welte. “We’re included in our community and want people to realize we’re here to help veterans and veterans’ families.”
