QUEEN CITY, MO. -- Residents of northeast Missouri banded together to raise money for cancer research during the annual Schuyler County Relay for Life.

This is the first time in a long time that the event is being held outdoors and organizers said the weather couldn't be better.

During the relay, held at the Schuyler County R-1 School, vendors were on hand, and cancer survivors were steadily arriving.

One Kirksville resident and survivor said this year, he has even more reason to help out the cause.

"This year, I'm doing it specifically for my ex wife. We were married 27 years, and she just very suddenly developed a grade four uterine cancer and died within a month," said Andy Lovy.

"So, I'm doing this to honor her. We all share the loss, we share the burden, but we also share the joy of the loved ones that we lost. She will be with me forever."

The Relay for Life also featured a car show, poker run, luminary service and survivor walk. Organizers said they'd like to raise $20,000. All of the donations will benefit the American Cancer Society.
