KIRKSVILLE, MO -- With the Missouri primary elections coming up on August 7, one Senate candidate made a stop in the Heartland to rally some last-minute support from voters.

Republican U.S. Congressman Todd Akin of St. Louis held a meet-and-greet at Rosie's Northtown Café in Kirksville Thursday afternoon.

He met with local leaders and residents to discuss what he will fight for in the senate, if elected. Issues like restoring jobs and the economy, controlling government spending, repealing President Obama's Healthcare Reform law, lowering taxes and smaller government.

He said he wants the people of the Show-Me State to know that he has the experience to do the job that his opponents don't.

"I think what I have to offer is a proven conservative record. Anyone can say they are conservative and talk nicely for a campaign. But we've seen when you put an unknown into office. How well is Obama working for us? How about the Supreme Court Judge who upheld Obamacare? How about the senators that we put in? What I have beats talking promises. I have a proven conservative record," Akin said.

Akin is going up against John Brunner and former State Treasurer, Sarah Steelman, for the Republican nomination.

The winner of Tuesday's primary will face off against incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill in the November elections.
