KIRKSVILLE, MO -- It's that time of year again for back to school shopping in the Show-Me-State, and it happens to be right when shoppers can get a break at the register.
This weekend, Friday, August 3 through Sunday, August 5 is Missouri's 9th annual Back to School Sales Tax Holiday.
During that time period, the state's sales tax will not be put on certain items. So what items are included?
"It applies to clothing and shoes, but not accessories like sunglasses or scarfs and jewelry. Those sort of things. But those things that are essentially clothes. It applies to school supplies, purchases up to $50," said Sandra Williams, Director of the Kirksville Chamber of Commerce.
With clothing, it can be any item with a taxable value of $100 or less.
The sales tax will also be free on computer software with a taxable value of $350 or less, and personal computers or computer peripheral devices not to exceed $3,500.
In the city of Kirksville, shoppers will be able to save 7.85% on qualifying purchases.
Williams is hoping this will encourage people to shop and help the city's economy.
"I hope it means that more people will stay at home and will shop here in Kirksville rather than running off to a larger city or mall somewhere. I hope they shop locally that will help our economy a little bit and save drive time on those parents who are looking for back to school items," Williams said.
