OTTUMWA, IOWA -- For Friday's Facebook Story of the Day, you wanted to know if it's legal for motorized wheelchairs to operate on city streets.

Officer Brad Johnson with the Ottumwa Police Department checked both city and state code, and told KTVO that while there are codes regarding lawn mowers, ATVs and other vehicles, there are no regulations specifically dealing with wheelchairs.

Officer Johnson said wheelchairs could technically be allowed on streets with speed limits less than 35 MPH, since they are classified as a motorized vehicle. However, he recommended that wheelchair users do not use the streets, and instead follow pedestrian rules on sidewalks and crosswalks for the person's own safety.

Because motorized wheelchairs are often low and close to the ground, it is difficult for cars to see them while driving.
