OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The storms that came through Ottumwa June 16 left many without power for days and knocked down hundreds of trees and branches throughout the city.
Weeks later, branch disposal has proved to be an ongoing process. Crews were out Thursday near the tennis courts, but the majority of the work left to do are small areas here and there.
"City crews have done a pretty good job cleaning up branches that were still hanging and being hazardous in the city's right of way and along the streets," said Tom Rodgers, Ottumwa Public Information Officer. "Park crews are still doing cleanup in the recreation areas around town and that process will continue probably throughout the summer getting all of that taken care of."
As far as the cleanup process as a whole, the city and community members worked hard and worked well together to get everything back into order.
"We've seen a tremendous effort on the part of the homeowners and residents of Ottumwa clearing up their own property, getting tree services in when needed and helping each other out as neighbors to clear away the mess from the storms," Rodgers said. "So I think it's a big thumbs up for the entire community."
The city's disposal site on Gateway Drive will still be open for another few weeks. Hours of operation are 6 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Fridays.
