MACON, MO. -- A Heartland Superintendent is retiring after being an educator for the past 35 years.

Macon R-I School District Superintendent Debbie Livingston held a retirement open house Tuesday afternoon. Her last day working for the district is June 29.

During her 8-year reign as Superintendent, she oversaw additions to the middle school and high school, including a science laboratory and computer lab. She also led the way for the district to receive the honor of "Distinction in Performance for Improved Achievement" from the state.

Livingston said she leaves with no regrets, and looks forward to spending more time with her three grandchildren.

"I've had a great career, 35 years. I don't know that I'd do anything different, if I was starting over," said Livingston.  I leave with fond memories. I only wish the very best for the district. It's kind of bitter sweet. I'm certainly going to miss the people. I'm definitely going to miss the students. Moving on to the next part of my life and that's just what happens with retirement, so, I'm looking forward to that."

Livingston began her career in Atlanta, Mo, her hometown. She worked three years there as a Business Education teacher, and then taught business in New Cambria, at Macon R-IV School District for 17 years. After that, she moved into administration and became a principal in New Cambria for three years and a superintendent for two years. Then, she worked in Green City as a Superintendent for three years, and then she began working in Macon. In all, she has spent a total of 20 years in the classroom and 15 years in administration.

"She has been very instrumental in following Macon R-I School Board policies, procedures, goals, what we set for her, and she's been a sparkling example of a tremendous school superintendent for Missouri, " said Jim Rehard, Macon R-I School Board President.

Rehard said her replacement, Dr. Charles Stockton, starts July 1.  He hails from southeastern Kansas. Rehard said the school board selected Stockton after interviewing five candidates and receiving 19 applications.
