OSKALOOSA, IOWA -- The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about possible home repair scams throughout southeast Iowa.
Mahaska County Sheriff Paul DeGeest spoke with KTVO Thursday about home repair scammers that make their way through southeast Iowa this time of year.
“They will come in and do some roof coating and that sort of thing. Basically throw some paint of some-sort on a roof and it looks good and they will charge you an outrageous price and move on. You see it with selling windows, new doors, lightning rods, driveways, asphalt; that sort of thing,” said DeGeest.
Sheriff DeGeest is urging residents in his county to go with a reputable contractor.
“My concern is people just don't fall for that. Let's go with a reputable business man that you know. If you don't know them, at least do some checking prior to having any work done. If you sign a contract, make sure before you pay that, it is exactly what you agreed for,” said DeGeest.
The sheriff also stressed that if the deal sounds to good to be true, it usually is.
Press release from the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office is below.
It is that time of year when the home repair scammers are starting to show up throughout southeast Iowa, wanting to do roof repair, gutters, asphalt, painting, windows, lightning rods, etc.
Sheriff DeGeest wants to remind all local citizens to please check out any contractors before agreeing to have any work done. You will want to get a written contract with the exact type of work and exact final cost prior to any work that is done.
