OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Mountain bike enthusiasts in Ottumwa will soon have something to cheer about.

The Ottumwa City Council will discuss constructing a mountain bike trail in Memorial Park at Tuesday's meeting. The item was discussed earlier this year, but was put on hold until safety concerns were addressed.

"There's been some site visits to the proposed mountain bike trail and it's been confirmed that it can be done safely," said Ottumwa City Administrator Joe Helfenberger. "It's very popular in a lot of parks and it would be done at no cost to the city by a volunteer group, so it looks like it's going to be a nice asset, a nice addition to the community."

Council members mainly wanted to ensure that the ground in the park wouldn't become unstable with the bikes passing through, and pedestrians using the park for other activities wouldn't be in danger.

If passed, the trail will likely begin construction this fall.
