OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Tuesday is primary election day and voters in Iowa will be choosing which candidates they would like to see on the ballot in November.

This year's primary is the first since the state re-drew the district lines, putting many new lawmakers in districts with incumbents. In Iowa, the primary election is closed, which means you must declare a party to vote.

Polls are open until 9 p.m., and as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, Wapello County saw numbers fairly close to the last primary election in 2008. By 10:30 a.m., 465 people had voted, down slightly from 474 four years ago.

Those numbers are typical for a primary election, where far less people come out to vote than in November.

"Usually there's less people that vote in a primary, and of course in November there's always a lot more people that get out and vote," said Danielle Weller of the Wapello County Auditor's Office. "I'm not sure why that is, but it seems like that's usually what happens, not a lot of people go out in June and vote. Any time there's an election everyone should get out and vote, that's your right."

Weller said voting usually picks up in the evening, once people have gotten off work.

If you have not registered to vote, you can still do so on election day. You just need to show up with proof of ID and residency. Even without those documents, you can fill out a provisional ballot available at the polls.
