KIRKSVILLE, MO -- If you're looking for something for your kids to learn and enjoy while they are out of school for summer break, you don't have to go further than reading a book.

The Adair County Public Library is hosting its annual summer reading program from now until July 12.

The program helps teach kids the importance of reading during the summer months.

"A half an hour a day is enough to help keep reading scores up during the summer. If a child reads during the summer they'll keep their scores up or even improve and can read at a higher level. They can go to the school in the fall with a higher reading level," said Adair County Public Library Librarian Diane Burger.

This year's theme is "Dream Big" to encourage children to focus on what they want to be when they grow up.

"Maybe they'll get a bit of interest and would want to read and learn more about a certain career area and maybe grow up to be that one day. Help them go a bit beyond the regular 9-5 job, but really have a career. Going out and grabbing a dream and achieving a dream," Burger said.

Everyone who signs up will receive a log, and earn prizes for reading.

There will also be a variety of activities such as guest speakers, craft days, and family fun events.
