KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Thursday was bike to work or school day in Kirksville Missouri. Participants were urged to stop by Northeast Regional Medical Center for free breakfast, giveaways, and a change to win prizes. It was also a good time for fellow bikers to interact with each other and learn about the areas biking paths.

“The event today is bicycling to work day. We here at Northeast Regional Hospital are a level three trams center and we feel like part of our responsibility in being a trauma center is also injury prevention in the community. There are a lot of school and professionals in the area that do a lot of cycling. We see car versus cyclist and the cyclist usually doesn’t fair to well in that situation. So our whole effort this morning is to equip the community with what they need to ride safely,” said Nursing Director of Emergency Mandy Doumit.

Bike to Work Day kicks off the five week course on Bicycling with Traffic. This course teaches you how to take your place on the road and have fun while being safe on your bike. The course is for novice and experienced cyclists ages 14 and up, regardless of ability.

“It’s a five week course, so it’s going to go through June. We are running it for free this first time. But we do need people to register and you can register at our website. The event is put on by Kirksville Area Motion which is the Bicyclist Pedestrian Advocacy Group," said Research Assistant Professor ATSU Rachael Ruhlen.

It is important to know that bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. For more information on the class visit www.ka-motion.org
