Students from Evans Middle School serve ice cream at the central fire station to raise money for smoke alarms.

OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Students from Evans Middle School were at the central fire station in Ottumwa Tuesday, raising money for those in need.
The annual "Fire and Ice" event is a way that the community can get involved and raise money for fire alarms for families that cannot afford them.
The students KTVO spoke with, who are members of the student council, were more than happy to be able to give back to the community.
"We are here at the fire station to help raise money for families in need of fire alarms," said Madison.
"Our goal this year is $1000," said Madisyn.
"Last year we raised enough money to buy a fire alarm for a family and it actually saved the families lives when their house caught on fire. It makes me feel like I am going to give back to my community and I am helping out," said Morgan.
Firefighters were also on hand to educate kids on how to safely escape from a fire through the Blank Children's Hospital fire safety trailer.
The money raised from Tuesday's event will go toward purchasing the smoke alarms. The fire department does install the alarms for free
