OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Saturday was the 16th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure raising money for breast cancer research.

“We've got over 2,200 people here today and it's just neat to see everyone out and participating and honoring people that have survived breast cancer,” said Tom Schafer, Race Director.

“I’m at 13 years survivor. So this is really quite an honor,” said Mable Hart, breast cancer survivor.

The race was held the day before Mother’s Day and this year’s goal was to raise $100,000. Participants raced in honor of friends, family and loved ones.

Breast cancer survivors were recognized by wearing pink T-shirts at the race.

“I was at the finish line when the first breast cancer survivor made it across the line –just to watch them doing the high fives and congratulating each other and finishing the race. I mean that's pretty moving in itself,” said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Lt. Gov. Reynolds gave a flower to each survivor symbolizing hope.

“For the Survivors Recognition Program, it’s very heartwarming. It’s very nice to realize you’re not the only one,” said Laurie Hornback, breast cancer survivor and race chair.
