HEDRICK, IOWA -- Students and staff from the Pekin Community School District converged on Hedrick Wednesday morning to help the town clean up from Saturday's severe storms.

Four school buses filled with over 160 students and 20 staff members were ready to give a helping hand to a community that means so much to the school district.

"We had no idea what was going on; Saturday night when we were let out of school we came out and there was just debris everywhere. It looked like a tornado had gone through," said Leslie Stone.

Principal Nathan Wood told KTVO that because Hedrick supports the Pekin community so much, this was the least they could do.

"We talk about all the different competencies and all the different things required to teach in education, but I think this is one of the best things we can do; have a learning by doing activity and giving back to the people that support us day in and day out at school," said Wood.

Because the students' prom was cut short due to the storm, Principal Wood said that they will be holding a sequel this Friday evening. The school is asking for donations for the prom. If you are interested in donating contact the Pekin Community School District at 319-695-3707.
