KIRKSVILLE, MO -- For Friday's Facebook Story of The Day, many of you wanted to know how badly the fleas and ticks will be this season.

According to veterinarians, this looks to be a bad year for them. Very cold weather helps kill or reduce the population, and because of the mild winter we just had, we'll be seeing more of the pesky creatures.

Experts say to prevent a flea or tick infestation on your pets do a treatment every month.

"Consistency, every 30 days, are the key," said Dr. Catherine Webb D.M.V of the Lindquist Veterinary Care Center. "Most of our products and treatments work every 30 days. They are killing the existing fleas. But during those 30 days, new flea eggs are hatching, as well. As soon as the 30 days are up, studies show the product isn't as effective."

Pills, sprays, and topical treatments are used to kill fleas and ticks. Natural plant-based chemical-free products are also available but are not as effective.
