SULLIVAN COUNTY, MO. -- A minister who was shot to death by Union soldiers during the Civil War is remembered in a special way in a northeast Missouri cemetery.
On Tuesday, the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church dedicated a marker at the grave of Rev. John L. Wood in Judson Cemetery in Sullivan County. The dedication was part of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The Archives and History Commission of the Missouri Conference, United Methodist Church, says in 1864, Rev. Wood was murdered in Unionville because he was a Methodist minister. He was shot in the back by a group of soldiers home on furlough from the 18th Reg. Mo. Volunteers.
Church historians say Rev. Wood was one of seven Methodist ministers martyred during the Civil War in Missouri because they were ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
