KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Stephen Barber, 72, Kirksville, surrendered his dental license in Jefferson City on Thursday.  On June 29, a judge denied a request by the Missouri Dental Board to suspend Barber's license until the disciplinary probation violation hearing, which is scheduled for Friday in Jefferson City.  Under that ruling, Barber was allowed to continue to practice dentistry until the probation hearing.

Barber's dental office in Kirksville was closed Thursday. Barber had been practicing under a probationary license since May 2009, after an investigation revealed controlled substance violations, along with allegations of incompetence and gross negligence and violations of the public trust.

Barber awaits sentencing after being convicted of criminal charges.  He was found guilty in June of two felony counts of tampering with a witness.  He is scheduled to be sentenced in Adair County Circuit Court on August 17. He could receive up to seven years in prison on each count.
