OTTUMWA,IOWA -- Ottumwans will soon have a more efficient method for trash pick up.

Starting in July, residents will get large 64 gallon trash carts. The cart is twice the size of the cart currently in use. The city council approved the automated switch March 1.

Recycling and other services like yard waste, as well as appliance pick up won't be affected.

Director of Health Inspections Jody Gates says it will help residents in more ways than one.

"They're going to get more trash disposal than they're currently allowed to put out for the base rate. It should save them money on bag tags. Every household that is collected by the city will get a 64 gallon container."

Carts will be distributed in June by the Bridge City Sanitation.
