BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- The Iowa Theatre has been a part of downtown Bloomfield since 1916.

Although the building has been sold several times and remodeled, the Davis County Arts Council currently owns the theatre. Many volunteers, including board member Lyle Stirling, work hard on keeping the upkeep of the building and community members continue to support the local arts.

"It's also a place where many people in our community can come and enjoy what the arts council sponsors here," said Stirling. "It's a win-win situation."

The theatre seats about 300 people. Along with musicals and plays the council also plays new movies on the weekends.

In 200 the Davis County Arts Council bought a building just south of the theatre. That building is now an extension of the original theatre and now there are plans to expand even more.

"A gentleman who drew up the plans for that also drew up plans to add onto the back of that building. We have brought those plans back out and are now looking at adding onto the back of that building. That will be used as dressing room facilities for the players."

Currently a building in the back alley is used the dressing room and a storage facility for props. Stirling says that during storms or in the winter time it’s difficult to go from one building to the other.

Stirling told KTVO that he expects generations to use the theatre.

"It will be here for a long time. We know that. We've been here for about 30 years and things are going just as well now as what they were five ten years ago. It'll be here."
