OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Bethany Baptist Church in Ottumwa celebrated 50 years of ministry this weekend.
Pastor Charles Comfort said this weekends activities were intended to celebrate the past, share memories, and understand the ministry must continue to the future.
Comfort said numbers are down from the old days, but it was nice to have everybody back in town.
They held a social fellowship event Saturday night, a special service on Sunday followed by a dinner and music.
“Last night’s program was great,” Comfort said. “I didn’t know how it was going to come across. I thought that maybe there would be a few people who would want to share but we couldn’t shut it off. People wanted to talk. They remembered all kinds of things that went on over the years.”
About 15 of the founding members remain in with Bethany Baptist Church today.
Three former pastors spoke at the Sunday morning service.
